Jeffrey Merry

Jeffrey began studying organized body movement at age 4 with gymnastics. In 1996, he developed an affinity to dance and pursued formal jazz, modern, hip-hop, and social dance training. He studied jazz and hip-hop at Sierra Dance Institute in Grass Valley where he later instructed lindy-hop swing lessons.

Jeff learned modern and lyrical jazz techniques at the American Academy of Dance in San Luis Obispo, CA. He improved upon his skills at Velocity Dance Center and Spectrum Dance Theater in Seattle, WA while he taught charleston, east-coast, and lindy-hop swing dancing with the University of Puget Sound Repertory Dance Group. He would eventually choreograph for this performance group. Paramount to other dance education, Jeff gained his classical ballet technique under scholarship at The San Francisco Academy of Ballet, where he appeared in a 2001 Nutcracker performance. Jeff adds to his repertoire of accomplished dance forms: swing, lindy-hop, blues, salsa, acro yoga, capoiera, and contact improvisation.

The first taste of aerial dance came to Jeff in 2005 at a show in Chicago. Within a year he would perform on fabric for AirAligned, with whom he continues training and performing. He is also recognized in aerial classes at the Athletic Playground in Oakland and Boulder Circus Center, Colorado. Inspired to create a circus community, Jeff helps facilitate the Nevada County Circus Jam where participants practice juggling, poi, hula hoop, stilt walking and other acts weekly at Pioneer Park. He organized the first Circus Exchange, a weekend of circus act workshops, hosting performers from San Francisco to Reno, including a fire dancing performance group.
